    Capital of India has a fascinating history & stimulating present. Delhi (seat of power through a number of dynasties) consists of the old city (17thC - the epitome of Indo-Islamic architecture) and New Delhi (mixture of east & west with red sandstone public buildings). Overnight: Trident Hotel

    Day 3 Mon Feb 26: Explore Delhi (political, economic & cultural capital

    Breakfast & depart for guided sightseeing tour of Old City. Highlights: Jama Masjid: (one of the largest mosques in India & sight of historical importance); a cycle rickshaw ride through the Chandani Chowk market; a drive past the Red Fort; the Raj Ghat (where Mahatma Gandhi lays at rest); & New Delhi. Highlights: Humayun’s Tomb (Tomb of Mughal Emperor Humayun - a wonderful early example of Mughal architecture); drive past India Gate (War Memorial), the presidents House & visit Qutab Minar (234 ft high tower), built following the defeat of the last Hindu kingdom in Delhi.

    Breakfast & check out for transfer to Agra by motorcoach. Check-in at hotel.     Breakfast & enjoy an early morning visit Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan, as the above show depicts, commissioned this UNESCO “Jewel of Muslim” World heritage site in memory of his favourite wife Mumtaz. From dawn to dusk, whether shrouded in mists & bathed with a soft red glow of morning or cast in the moonlight, its vast marble surfaces fall into shadow or reflect the sun and its colour seemingly changes.     Day 6 Thu Mar 1: Agra / Jaipur (rose-pink capital of Rajasthan)

    Breakfast & check out to depart to Jaipur (enroute visiting Fatehpur Sikri - an epic red sandstone city of yesteryear - today lost in the midst of time. The beautiful marvel tomb built to commemorate the blessings of Sheikh Salim Chishti attracts thousands seeking blessings of the revered saint). Drive to Jaipur; check in. After some leisure, witness the Eve of Holi Festival (“Small Holi”) activities. The bigger spring/religious festival Holika Dahan, “Festival of Colours” takes place on the next day.     Breakfast & depart for the Holi celebration at Shahpura House or similar. This ancient Hindu, extremely popular (and fun) tradition is celebrated with fervor all across the country & is symbolic of triumph of good over evil ... the importance of love & hapiness & the formation of new friendships.

    Celebration Tentative schedule (subject to change): 10 am - Arrive & change (clothes provided) | 10:30-11am - Assemble on the lawn & enjoy special delicacies | 11-12:30 pm – Celebrate Holi festival (pichkari & herbal colours - throw powder bombs and fire water pistols as colour runs through the streets) | 12:30-1 pm – wash & change | 1-2 pm – Indulge in delicious buffet lunch & depart.     Breakfast & pick up for a guided sightseeing tour of Jaipur. Highlights: Explore Amber Fort (the former capital of the Royal Rajputs) by elephant or jeep ride; visit Jaipur City: Hawa Mahal or Palace of the Winds, a five-storied structure of pink sand stone with semi-octagonal and delicately honeycombed windows overlooking the main street of the old city; City Palace & Museum, in the heart of the old city, is a seven storied building called Chandra Palace; the Solar Observatory - an astronomical treasure house, with solar devices that still give accurate predictions.     Day 9 Sun Mar 4: Jaipur / Udaipur

    check out & transfer for flight to Udaipur (hotel provides packed breakfast). Transfer to hotel. This city combines beauty with picturesque associations of a great and glorious past. Highlights: Take in the view of the palace of the Maharaja & all the magnificence of the East – take an afternoon stroll around the city and a boat ride on Lake Pichola – visit the Jag Niwas Palace, covering 4 acres neary all built in the middle of the lake.
